So it's time for another post on one of my many other passions, tea! Among the gifts that my very generous aunts left behind (before they went back home to Hong Kong) was rosebud tea. They heard that a lot of celebrities in HK drink the stuff for it's health benefits and I suppose everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon and drink stuff that apparently reduces cancer and cholesterol. I absolutely adore green tea so I thought I would give this stuff a go.
So pretty!
So what do I think? Well there wasn't any doubt that these were real dried rose buds. As the box says, it's definitely a delight for the senses. The heady, floral scent was not unlike pot pourri (make of that, what you will!) and a bit of honey really enhanced the taste...but it's all a bit weird! I almost swallowed a petal and I didn't know quite what to do with myself.
I think it would taste a lot better brewed with a bit of green tea, but it's definitely a unique tea that takes some time getting used to. A part of me feel a bit sorry for the rose bushes though, oh the poor things!
Aw, it looks so pretty! I really want to try this tea I've heard of where it is a closed flower that them opens when submerged in the hot water....I don't know what it is called but I want some!

huh... whoever thought that one up is interesting, I can honestly say putting flowers in boiling water never occured to me!! but either way it makes for a pretty picture, especially on the purple.

ReplyDeleteI think my grandmother has tried this before, for health reasons, and if I remember correctly she boiled the rosebuds on the stove for a while before drinking it. Maybe that would enhance the taste? And that way you could strain out the rosebuds and avoid swallowing them! Or maybe you could just add a couple of them to green tea like you suggested. I'd love to try this!

ReplyDeleteI like that your fingernail is the same colour as the rose! One of the nicest teas I've tasted is lavender earl grey; I also had cherry blossom and peach black teas in Japan and they were lovely.

ReplyDeleteYes, Hachiko is a popular meeting place. Unfortunately it's always really crowded with people smoking. I'd say definitely avoid it on weekends and nights!
I love tea, but I've never drunk anything with flowers in it.

ReplyDeleteI've had rose bud tea before (funnily enough from HK to) and it didn't really taste of much but when I had it in the teahouse in Beijing they brewed it with black tea leaves and it tasted quite nice, slightly sweet and smelt wonderful so I wonder if that's the proper way to enjoy it?
ReplyDeleteAlso you've reminded me I need to get myself one of those "lazy boy" cups with a tea strainer in them sometime, nothing is worse then getting tea leaves stuck to your teeth XD

ReplyDeleteI think green tea is something that takes a while to get used to too... it's so bitter! I definately prefer coffee to tea, though.
I've never heard of rosebud tea before! It looks really pretty, but I would be worried about swallowing them. I think I'll stick to teabags, they're pretty foolproof!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers, Winnie! I've always wondered about this too. I love the smell of roses and rose scented things, but I'm not sure if I could drink it... happily. Brewing it with green tea sounds genius because that will cut the cloying floral flavor of the roses I bet.

ReplyDeleteso pretty in purple. love the color. it would take me a bit to get used to. actually. i'm a tried a true bring on the caffiene girl. I love iced tea and usually, 2 bags of lipton brewed for a bit. Ice added sweetened with agava nector is my choice.
